Pet Shop Boys es un dúo de pop electrónico procedente del Reino Unido. Sus integrantes son Neil Francis Tennant, vocalista, tecladista y ocasional guitarrista, y Christopher Sean Lowe, tecladista y en ocasiones vocalista.

Hasta ahora Pet Shop Boys han vendido más de 100 millones de discos en todo el mundo.1 Desde 1986, 40 de sus singles han alcanzado el Top 20 y 22 en Top 10 en Reino Unido, además de cuatro número uno: "West End Girls", "It's a Sin", "Always on My Mind" y "Heart".

Cabe destacar que Pet Shop Boys no solamente componen para sí mismos sino que colaboran frecuentemente con otros artistas tanto en la producción, composición y remezcla de temas. Hasta el momento, el dúo ha editado 2 bandas sonoras y 13 discos de estudio, siendo el último, Super, lanzado en 2016. Éste ha recibido elogios por su estilo dance en colaboración con Stuart Price, lo que le ha valido que varios críticos y la audiencia lo consideren su mejor álbum desde Very en 1993, alcanzando en #3 en las listas de los discos más vendidos de 2013 en Reino Unido, con lo cual dejan en claro que la esencia que los caracteriza y el "toque inglés" de sus canciones sigue aún vigente, a pesar de que el estilo de sus últimos álbumes se ha alejado de aquel que hicieron de sus primeros álbumes un éxito.

Neil Tennant y Chris Lowe se conocieron en una tienda de artículos electrónicos en King's Road, en Chelsea, Londres el 19 de agosto de 1981. Esto sucedió debido a que Neil, después de la compra de un piano electrónico, no sabía cómo enchufarlo a una fuente de potencia, y entonces se dirigió a la mencionada tienda para adquirir un plug especial para el equipo. Ahí fue que se encontró con Lowe. Como tenían en común su afición a la música (incluso Tennant escribía como crítico musical en Smash Hits, una revista musical que dejó de existir en 2006), decidieron escribir juntos, a pesar de la disparidad de gustos artísticos entre ellos: a Neil le gustaba la música clásica y a Chris el dance. Originalmente pensaban llamarse West End, debido a su gusto por el centro londinense, pero luego cambiaron a su nombre actual recordando a un amigo de ambos que trabajaba en una tienda de mascotas. A Tennant, particularmente, le gustó mucho este nombre porque sonaba como el de un grupo de Rap.

Alphaville es una banda alemana de synth pop y new wave que fue muy popular en la década de 1980. Sus canciones más populares fueron Big in Japan, Sounds Like a Melody y Forever Young, todas contenidas en su álbum debut Forever Young de 1984.

En 1982, el cantante Marian Gold y el teclista Bernhard Lloyd formaban parte de un proyecto musical llamado Nelson Community, allí formaron una banda llamada Chinchilla Green que no prosperó. Ese mismo año, Lloyd formó una banda con Frank Mertens, otro teclista, entonces ellos llamaron a Gold para que fuera el cantante, de esta manera nació la banda Forever Young, que más tarde sería rebautizada como Alphaville.

En 1983, Alphaville edita su primer sencillo titulado Big in Japan, que pronto se convertiría en un éxito mundial y que junto con Sounds Like a Melody serían un anticipo de su álbum Forever Young, que incluía también el éxito del mismo nombre. Pese al éxito obtenido, Frank Mertens deja la banda y es reemplazado por Ricky Echolette en teclados y guitarra, quien fuera compañero de ellos en Chinchilla Green.

En 1986, editan otro sencillo llamado Dance with Me que tendría gran éxito, como anticipo de su segundo álbum titulado Afternoons in Utopia. En 1988, editan un recopilatorio conteniendo todos los sencillos de la banda hasta ese momento y, al año siguiente, lanzan The Breathtaking Blue, que incluía el sencillo Romeos.

Alphaville tardó varios años en editar su siguiente álbum, mientras tanto, Marian Gold realizó un disco en solitario en 1992. Es en 1994 cuando Alphaville realiza su cuarto álbum de estudio, llamado Prostitute. En 1996, Ricky Echolette abandonó la banda pero dejó algunas contribuciones para el álbum Salvation, que se editaría al año siguiente.

Entre 1997 y 2010, Alphaville solo edita álbumes recopilatorios y de rarezas. Pero ya para 2003, la banda volvió a mutar con la partida de Bernhard Lloyd. La formación quedó entonces con Gold como cantante, Martin Lister en teclados, Dave Goodes en guitarra y Jakob Kiersch en batería. En 2010, editan su sexto álbum de estudio llamado Catching Rays on Giant.1

El 21 de mayo de 2014 falleció el teclista Martin Lister.2 En 2017 la agrupación publica un nuevo álbum de estudio, titulado Strange Attractor.
